Strategic Planning and Positioning

Targeting the allocation of resources to strengthen competitive advantage and market position.

Innovative Solutions worked with the National Forest Foundation (NFF) to define a new strategic direction and business model that has helped reposition the organization – resulting in a more focused conservation program, increased efficiency, and improved visibility. In the first three years of implementing the plan, the NFF has been able to catalyze and fund 162 community-based conservation initiatives across the National Forest System.

Our research and analysis of forest conservation threats and opportunities allowed the leadership team to formulate a set of integrated goals and strategies for coordinating efforts and maximizing results across national, local, functional, and programmatic boundaries. Financial projections and operational plans were developed that helped the Board of Directors make critical resource allocation decisions. Top of page

Organizational Design and Change.

Fostering performance-based thinking and change through objective evaluation and the principles of shared value.

Innovative Solutions worked with the Woodland Park Zoo to define and move forward with organization-wide change precipitated by the merger of nonprofit and city government entities.

Drawing on information collected from interviews and meetings with staff, volunteers, and board members, we conducted a high-level assessment of the Zoo’s institutional strengths and weaknesses, providing management with an early “hit list” for removing barriers to improved performance. Innovative Solutions also helped develop a set of core values for the merging organizations, creating operating principles that the Zoo is using to promote collaboration and excellence. By providing an opportunity for stakeholders to participate and share ideas, we contributed to the effectiveness and credibility of the new leadership team. Top of page

Systems Design and Implementation.

Upgrading business systems and technology to improve the accuracy and exchange of data.

For The Nature Conservancy, we analyzed domestic and international human resource processes and management information needs to determine the functional and technical requirements for the organization’s new human resource information system. Our work provided a prescriptive for correcting existing system shortcomings, and meeting projected information needs across an expanding, global network.

Innovative Solutions provided project management oversight that coordinated system design, development, and implementation efforts between the vendor and the Conservancy’s multi-disciplinary team of human resource, finance, and information technology professionals. Our work helped the Conservancy streamline selected human resource processes, and automate the transfer of time-sensitive data between internal financial, security, training, and human resource systems and vendors. Board, Management and Team Development.

Improving consistency of results by defining strategy, clarifying roles, and simplifying processes.

Innovative Solutions designed and facilitated a board retreat and strategic planning process for The Bullitt Foundation. Our work helped clarify the mission and built consensus among the Board and staff on future funding goals and strategies.

New funding strategies designed to increase the return on investment of high-priority projects have been implemented. The Board is more actively engaged in funding decisions, fiduciary oversight, and programmatic reviews, resulting in greater accountability and improved governance.

Clearly defined roles and responsibilities have resulted in a more productive use of Board and staff time and effort. The Foundation’s streamlined grant review process has significantly reduced the amount of time and effort spent with grant proposals, and has focused more attention on the impact of funding decisions. Process Improvement.

Changing how data is managed and shared, to work efficiently and maximize effort.

For Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker, Innovative Solutions coordinated staff and vendor efforts during the initial phase of implementation for its new human resource information system. We worked with the firm to determine ways to streamline human resource processes for efficiency, accountability, and management of confidential data.

Through our work, the vendor made system modifications that met the firm’s critical business requirements – within budget. We helped the firm identify requirements for integrating their legal, client tracking, financial, and personnel information systems – eliminating data redundancies and the potential for error, as well as providing timely access to key information necessary in the firm’s day-to-day business. Organizational Design and Change.

Reducing costs and building skills to transform staff into motivated, productive team members.

As Regional Director of Operations at The Nature Conservancy, Ann Dederer worked collaboratively with management and staff to implement an organization-wide restructuring. She administered changes to programs, structure, and staffing – sustaining performance and motivation during an extended period of uncertainty. Ann cut overhead by streamlining central and decentralized administrative processes.

In one year, she eliminated year-end budget overruns, integrated planning and budgeting, and increased accountability and financial oversight for the region. She led the design and implementation of training programs that built skill sets and capacity where they contributed directly to front-line operations – a model subsequently used by other regions.
